The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of moral judgment in Chinese adolescents and to find out the relationship between MMS (Moral Maturity Score), age, sex, I. Q., S. E. S. (socio-economic status), and the area. Three hundred and ninety Ss, age from 8 to 16, were drawn from 3 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools, and 1 senior high school.
Piaget’s semiclinical interview approach was employed to test the Ss with 3 dilemmatic stories. Kohlberg’ s Moral Judgment Scoring Manual was used to judge the MMS of the Ss. The major finding of the study are as follows:
1. Moral judgment of Chinese adolescents is less mature than their American counterparts.
2. Moral judgment of Chinese adolescents has its sequence of development. Older Ss use more mature ways to resolve their problems than younger ones.
3. There is no significant difference between male and female Ss in terms of moral judgment.
4. Ss with higher I.Q, have higher MMS than Ss with average I.Q.
5. Moral judgment of the Ss of high S.E.S. and low S.E.S. does not reach significant level of difference.
6. Ss from citics are significantly mature in moral judgment than those from mountain areas.
Based on findings and conclusions of this study, suggestions for inproving moral education in the Republic of China are included.
